North Islands and Nationals – heads-up

FYI the North Island Individuals 2016 (entry form) is here (July 15-17 just up the road in Palmerston North – entries are due Friday June 24).

Accommodation is at a premium over this weekend due to a number of other sporting events in Palmerston North at the same time. Please look to secure accommodation as soon as possible. If you have any issues finding suitable accommodation please contact ttnz@tabletennis.org.nz .

Travel Report: NZIS Tournament (May 25)

This tournament report of the 2016 New Zealand Institute of Sports Table Tennis Tournament is from Malcolm Wong.

This was held at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie on Wednesday 25 May, as part of the annual 3 day multi-sport tournament (24-26 May). This is the fifth year table tennis has been held. There were Men’s Singles, Women Singles and Mixed Doubles.There was 1 point for each win. The overall winner depended on the last mixed doubles match between Wellington and Christchurch. Wellington won 2-1 to finish first from Christchurch and Auckland. Wellington retained the title they won last year and have now tied with Auckland (winner in 2012 & 2014). Travel Report: South Island Championships (14-15 May)

This travel report is from Malcolm Wong.

Malcolm Wong and Martin Young travelled to this tournament held at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin. Martin Young reached the final of the C Grade Singles won by Jay Zhu (Canterbury) 3-2 (7-11 15-13 11-9 6-11 11-6). The result may well have been different if Martin had managed to win the second game where he lead 10-8. Martin also reached the semi finals of the Over 50 Men’s Singles won by John Fogarty (Otago) 3-0. Martin recorded good wins over Dave Samson and Steve Craw (both Canterbury) in earlier rounds.

Malcolm Wong and Martin Young were runner up in the Over 50 Men’s Doubles won by John Fogarty and Willie Brock (Otago) 3-1 (4-11 11-6 11-7 11-6). They were also runner up in the C Grade Doubles won by Jay Zhu and Hong Zhong (Canterbury) 3-0 (11-9 11-5 13-11).

Travel Report: 2016 Marlborough Open (7-8 May)

Ben Collins, Malcolm Wong and Tony Rutledge all traveled to this tournament which was held at the Simcox Stadium (Blenheim). The field included 28 males (8 juniors) and 5 females (2 juniors). Winter Interclub – Results

The 2016 Winter Interclub Series One Finals were held June 28/29 and saw the finals of the three interclub divisions.

Premier Grade saw an exciting matchup between the top two teams of recent seasons, Titan Terriers (2015 champions) and Waterloo Wasps. A number of spectators were rewarded with a tight contest for the Hearfield Cup with no match an easy victory. In the end, Waterloo Wasps prevailed by 6 matches to 3, with superiority in the doubles being a key factor.

The playoff for third and fourth place saw Empire Entertainers too strong for Titan Trailblazers, winning 10-1.

Division One featured the Series front-runners, Empire Enforcers against Onslow Titan batting for the Chis Williams Cup. Form from the round robin matchup between these teams was reversed with Onslow Titan causing a surprise by winning 7-4. Previous title holders Waterloo Wolves beat Waterloo Wapitis 10-1 in the playoff for third and fourth.

The Division Two final between two Empire teams, Empire Elms and Empire Egrets was eagerly awaited after a close result the previous week. The Empire Egrets prevailed 7-4 with their greater depth evident, despite a valiant effect from Vladimir Vysotskiy who won three singles for the Empire Elms. In the other fixture, Waterloo Whales beat a depleted Empire Echoes team 8-3.
