There were 36 players at this event including visitors from Marlbourgh (4), Canterbury (2) and Wellington (5). The Wellington players were Depak Patel, Bryan McConnochie, Paul Solt, Ryan Cronin and Malcolm Wong. Winners and runner up of events are attached.
In the Men’s Singles both Depak Patel and Bryan McConnochie reached the semi finals. Depak lost 1-4 to the eventual winner Daniel Astle, and Bryan won the 4th game to level at 2-2 against Simon Hoey-Burns before losing 2-4. Depak and Bryan were runner up in the Men’s Doubles losing to Simon Hoey- Burns and Mike Couling 3-2 (15-13 11-6 9-11 6-11 11-5).
Paul Solt was runner up in the Second Grade Singles losing to Paul Op den Buysch 3-1 (11-13 11-6 15-13 11-5). This is Paul Op den Buysch first tournament singles title.
Ryan Cronin had a good win 3-1 against Mark Nalder (The Over 50 and 60 Singles winner) in the first round of the Over 40 Singles knockout. Mark had also won Over 40 Singles at The Marlborough Open this year. In the Quarter Finals Ryan lead Bryan McConnochie 2-1 before losing 2-3. In the Semi Finals Bryan came back from 0-2 to level the score at 2-2 before losing 2-3 to Daniel Astle.
In the Over 40 Singles final Depak Patel was runner up to Daniel Astle 3-1 (11-5 11-6
6-11 11-7). Depak Patel and Paul Solt won the Over 40 Doubles against Phil Osborne and Paul Op den Buysch 3-1 (11-6 1-11 11-6 11-7).
Malcolm Wong, with Mark Nalder, won the Over 50 Doubles against Paul Solt and Gary Basher 3-1 (11-4 11-5 11-13 11-8). Malcolm and Mark also won the Over 60 Doubles final against Kevin Neumann and Gary Basher 3-1 (11-8 11-9 10-12 11-3). Malcolm lost to Mark Nalder in the Over 60 semi finals 1-3 and also in the Over 50 Singles semi finals 2-3 where he had a number of match points in the 4th game.
