There were 18 tables (16 Butterfly and 2 Stiga Tables). 75 players entered in the novice and Over 35, 45, 55, 65, 70 and 75 age groups. Singles were in the morning and Doubles and Mixed Doubles were in the afternoon. Malcolm wins a gold in the Over 65 Men’s Doubles and bronze in the Over 65 Men’s Singles and Over 65 Mixed Doubles. Martin wins bronze in the Over 45 Men’s Doubles.

They won the bronze medal match in the Over 45 Men’s Doubles 3-1 against Richard Keen (Dunedin) and John Keenan (Masterton).
In the Over 65 Men’s Singles Malcolm qualified second in his group (on countback as there was a 3 way tie for second) behind Trevor Gardner and lost to Barry Ellis (Southland, ex Otago) 1-3 in the semi finals. The result may have been different if Malcolm had won game 2 where he lead 8-4. In the bronze medal match Malcolm beat Trevor Gardner (Christchurch) 3-1 which reversed the result of their group match where he lost 0-3. In the Over 65 Men’s Doubles Malcolm with Dereck Adamson (Auckland, ex Whanganui) won all their 3 matches (round robin) to win the gold from Trevor Gardner/Doug Browning (Silver) and Doug Hodd/Gary Hogg (Bronze).
In the Over 65 Mixed Doubles Malcolm with Janet Calder (Oamaru) won their group and then lost in the semi finals to Barry Ellis/June King (Southland/Mosgiel) 1-3. They won the bronze medal playoff match 3-1 against Doug Browning/Lynley Routhan (Dunedin/Gore).
On Sunday Martin Young won his Over 55 Singles group, including beating Barry Ellis 3-1, and lost in the over 55 Singles semi finals to Willie Brocks 0-3. In the bronze medal match he lost to John Fogarty 0-3. Malcolm Wong lost the crucial match in his group 2-3 and finished 3rd. In the Over 55 Men’s Doubles Martin Young and Malcolm Wong lost in the semi finals to Willie Brocks/John Fogarty 0-3. In the bronze medal match they lost to Peter Williams/Michael Price (Auckland/Christchurch) 0-3. So Martin had the misfortune to lose 3 of the 4 bronze medal playoffs he was in.
Thanks to the organisers Barry Kendall and Stephen Burgess (from Table Tennis Otago), for running the tournament. There was food and drinks available nearby. Netball was also being played at the Edgar Centre which made it difficult for the table tennis players to concentrate because of the noise level.
