The 2014 New Zealand Institute of Sports Table Tennis Tournament was held at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie. Auckland won all the events after being third last year. There were exciting final matches in the Men’s Singles where Istead beat White 2-1 (11-9 in the 3rd) and Mixed Doubles where Istead & Erihe beat Hira & Galang 2-1 (15-13 in the 3rd). If Wellington had won both those matches instead of Auckland they would have won overall. Thanks to Malcolm Wong and Roger Watkin who were the umpires, and Malcolm Wong who organised the draw and photos.

From Malcolm who was in Auckland as an official at the 2014 World Vets in May.
Over 1600 players completed in the 17th World Veteran Championships held in the Trusts Arena (Henderson) in West Auckland. A great experience in the largest table tennis tournament to be held in New Zealand and an excellent venue. There were many volunteers that helped to make the tournament run successfully. Access to the Stadium was only allowed on Friday 9 May at 9 pm and volunteers worked until 5am to lay down the Stag Flooring. Also the tables that were put up to allow the players to practice in the weekend were taken down for the opening ceremony on Sunday night and then were put back up which took to midnight.
I was a Table Manager (Monday and Tuesday) for group play in singles and doubles where 59 tables were used. Then i umpired from Thursday to Saturday. I umpired the Over 50 Women Singles final and the Over 60 Men’s Doubles final on Saturday afternoon. I was also the counter for a expedite match in the Over 75 Men’s Singles Final which was the last match to finish.
A number of Wellington players qualified for the main draw in the Men’s Singles. They were Heath Murdoch (Over 40), Chris Talbot (Over 50), Ian Talbot (Over 60), Merv Allardyce (Over 80) and Eddie Moore (Over 80). Eddie Moore was the only player to win a match in the main draw when he beat Ichimura Saburo (Japan) 3-0. Chris and Ian Talbot qualified for the main draw in the Over 50 Men’s Doubles where they lost a close match 2-3. Merv Allardyce and Eddie Moore were runner up in the Over 80 Men’s Doubles Consolation Final.

A small attendance for the first of the 2014 Development Tournaments (held yesterday, June 15) but this helped ensure plenty of table tennis for those who participated. Special mention should be made of three players from Manawatu who journeyed down for the day.
All players were of a good standard with several making their first tournament appearances. With players giving of their best, the constant play against good opposition saw games that were enjoyable to watch for the good number of spectators. Several players improved noticeably with the experience and should take encouragement from their efforts.
All players should be congratulated for their play and their willingness to umpire when not playing and we look forward to seeing them all at future tournaments at this and higher levels.

Winter interclub is starting in less than a month (May 20/21 start, teams due from your club May 13) please work with your club over the next couple of weeks to get your name in and help get players together for the season. (Forms and rules will be sent out to clubs.)

There were originally 7 teams entered in the B Grade, with an additional team, Onslow, entering towards the end of section play. Te Rama and Titan had 3 teams each, with one from Apollon and Onslow. There were 9 Affiliated Clubs and 30 interclub teams in 5 grades in the Wellington winter interclub that year.
The first round was called Section Play. The Te Rama teams completely dominated and finished in the top 3 places. Te Rama A won all its matches. Brian Hearfield and Henry Anastasi had been in the Te Rama A team (with Ken Mitchell and Roger Watkin) that was runner up in the B Grade the previous year. They were joined by Malcolm Wong, who had played A Reserve in 1988, and was to win 10 Te Rama Club Singles. Brian and Malcolm were in the Te Rama Team that had been runner up in C Grade (1985), won C Grade (1986) and were runner up in B Grade (1987).
Their main rivals Te Rama C had regulars Roger Watkin and Peter Wong, joined by David Robinson and Martin Young, who had previously played C Grade for the Ling Tse Club which had folded up. Regular interclub players included Chris Papanicolau and Peter Varuhas (Apollon), Reg Seddon (Titan A), Ken Hindson, John Lister, Jeff Larsen, Giles Moiser (Te Rama B) and David Pyle (Titan B).
In the Championship Round Te Rama had won all its matches prior to the last round. They then lost to Te Rama C 4-8. Both teams finished with 12 points but as Te Rama A had 71 points compared to Te Rama C’s 65, they won the title. Team results and interclub averages are attached here.
Te Rama players dominated the interclub averages taking the first 6 places. Henry Anastasi headed the averages with 36 wins out of 39 games (92.30%) ahead of Brian Hearfield (27 /30) 90%. Te Rama also won the Sportswear Models Trophy awarded to the club gaining the best average of interclub wins, based on their 3 most successful teams. Te Rama had previously the Trophy in 1974, 1977, 1981 and 1987. A final win was to be achieved in 1990.
In the B Grade Championships (4 July), Henry Anastasi was the first winner of the Brian Hearfield Cup (B Grade Singles) when he defeated his team mate Malcolm Wong 21-16 19-21 21-13. The B Grade Doubles was won by Henry Anastasi and Malcolm Wong who won against Ian Searle and Rith Kim 21-10 21-14. Henry and Malcolm also won the A Reserve Grade Doubles (6 July), beating Jason Granville and Andrew Milburn 24-22 21-17. Malcolm’s previous success was the 1982 C Grade Regional Doubles with Brian Roberts. Henry had won the 1982 D Grade Regional Singles and Doubles (with B Hislop) and 1982 D Grade Open Doubles (with Richard Chung). He also won the 1988 B Grade Doubles with Bruce Lawrence.
In the Wellington v Hutt Valley Grades match (13 August) the Wellington B Grade Team (Henry Anastasi, Brian Hearfield, Malcolm Wong), lost 5-6. This was the last year that these 3 players were to play interclub together. Henry Anastasi moved to Australia the following year. Brian Hearfield remained in B Grade. Malcolm Wong moved up to A Reserve and later on to Premier 2 and 1.

The Mike Flynn Memorial Award is awarded to the most improved junior in Table Tennis Wellington for the previous year also including attitude, cooperation and respect for others. We would like to congratulate Ellen Xiong as the winner of the award for 2013! As well as her excellent play and friendly attitude, her work on the Waterloo club committee has been greatly appreciated by Waterloo and beyond.

The 2014 Table Tennis Wellington Yasaka Veterans Open tournament is open to all-comers. It is well placed as a lead-up for the World Veterans tournament this year in Auckland. If you turn 40 or more in 2014 then you are eligible – so mark your calendar!

After a number of years of discussion for a stronger interclub competition, The Wellington and Hutt Valley Associations reached agreement to have a combined Premier Grade. The top 4 teams from each association were placed in the Premier 1 Grade and the next 4 teams into the Premier 2 Grade. Matches were played at the Newtown Stadium (Wellington) and the Empire Club (Petone).
The Premier 1 Grade was won by Empire, undefeated with 13 wins and one draw, who were 6 points clear off runner up Onslow. This was despite Onslow having the top 2 players in the singles averages, Peter Miller and Lloyd Richards. Lindsay Ward is the only player from Premier 1 still playing interclub today. Current Table Tennis Wellington Life Member and committee member Bruce Northover played for Waterloo B.
Premier 2 was won by Empire A. After the final Round Titan had 22 points and 110 Matches. Empire A had 20 points and 111 matches. Under the then rules, as Empire A had won the most matches, a playoff was necessary against Titan. Unfortunately for Titan their top player Murray Coppen was unavailable and Empire won easily. Tony Rutledge is the only player from Premier 2 still playing interclub today. Tony Radford (Johnsonville) was a future NZ Men’s Representative.

Welcome to the second web-notice from the Stag WVC2014 website.> We have just published full registration lists as at 26th February and invite you to check your own details. This is what will be printed in the programme, and on your participation diploma and accreditation pass. Some entrants have included middle names, which is not necessary. We may have to exclude these when we print, for space issues, but you can also amend yourself. You can now look for a suitable doubles partner if required. Those that have not achieved a closed doubles pairing (both partners confirming each other's registration number and both being fully paid) by March 18th will be placed on a 'partners required' list to be forwarded to Swaythling Club to assign pairings. These pairings will be confirmed and published around April 10th. The singles draw and schedules will be published on this website around April 30th. Remember that registrations close on March 15th. So please tell all of your friends who might wish to enter, and anyone who might wish to volunteer their services. Anyone wanting to enter or help out should register here. Please make sure that your entry You can also book tickets for the Gala Dinner / Farewell If you still require accommodation or official transportation please book via Event Travel Office. If you need invitations to assist visa applications, please contact us as soon as possible. We want to make sure you get here for all the fun! Please make sure that you arrive at Trusts Arena in good time to complete accreditation (at very least 1 hour before you play) and pick up your accreditation pass, player number, programme, gala dinner tickets and Stag accreditation pack. Nha was born in Saigon (1942) in Vietnam as the fourth of seven children. He started swimming at age 5 and excelled in the freestyle sprints. However there was a table tennis table at his home and he started playing at age 10 with his brothers, where he developed his trademark blocking style. These were his main sports though he also played tennis as an adult.
After gaining university entrance at high school he passed the entrance exam to study education at Saigon University (1959-63). He graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Education. He was the Captain of the swimming team and won the 100 and 200 freestyle at the University Swimming Championships (1959-63). He represented the University at the South Vietnam University Sports Tournament.
Also at the University was Inh Van Le, the Captain of the table tennis team, who was to represent South Vietnam in table tennis. Inh was to win the Southeast Asian Games Men’s Singles (1967) and Men’s Doubles (1969) and was runner up in the Men’s Doubles (1973). He was also a Men’s Doubles bronze medallist at the 1962 Asian Games with his brother Tiet Van Le, who was the French Open Singles Champion (1959) and was in the South Vietnam Men’s Team that won Gold (1958 Asian Games) and Bronze (1959 World Championships). Inh Van Le moved to Australia and is a table tennis coach and top veteran player, winning 36 Australian Individual Veteran Titles (1993-2013).
After university Nha attended teachers college for 4 years and then taught English at high school. He married in 1974 and in 1975 he was selected as a Columbo Plan student (12 from South Vietnam) and came to New Zealand to study English at Victoria University, Wellington. Three months after he left, South Vietnam was defeated in the war by North Vietnam. Nha became stateless and unable to return home but was given permanent resident in New Zealand by the Government and become a New Zealand Citizen the following year. After his course, Nha found work at the Department of Social Welfare. His wife and son finally managed to leave Vietnam and arrived in New Zealand in early 1979. Nha purchased a dairy in Hawker Street and was there for 3 years before moving to the Austin Street Dairy (1982-2009) before retiring.
Nha started playing table tennis at the Titan Club (1975) and his University A Team (with Huy Hoang and R Clark) won the Wellington Table Tennis A Reserve Grade (1978). In 1980 his Titan Team (with Adrian Lust, Warren Mak, Lindsay Ward) won the Wellington A Grade Competition. Nha was also in the Titan Terriors Team (with Lindsay Ward, Harry Singh, Robert Chung) that won Premier 1 in 2007.
Nha was ranked 11 times on the Wellington Men’s list and achieved a best ranking of 5 (2001) and represented Wellington at the New Zealand Championships and Veterans Championships in the veterans team. In 2008 Wellington, Eddie Moore and Nha, lost to North Harbour 2-3 in the Over 65 Men’s Team Final after earlier beating them 4-1 in group play. Nha won several veterans tournament singles titles including the Wanganui Over 40, Hutt Valley Open Over 50, Wellington Autumn Open Over 60 and Wellington Open Over 50 & 60. With Lindsay Ward, Nha won 15 veterans doubles tournament titles including 5 consecutive Wellington Open Over 40 Doubles (1998-2002).
Nha no longer plays interclub table tennis but still attends the Titan Club on Sunday mornings. He also walks, swims, plays tennis and snooker. His Petone snooker team was runner up in the Wellington Working Men’s Competition (2012). He hopes to continue playing table tennis for a very long time!
