2018 Wellington New Chinese Friendship Association tourney – Aug 12, 2018

 

This tournament first started in 2003 and has been played every year with the exception of 2017.

This year there were 18 competitors in the Open Singles.

Fiona Zhai (from China studying in Wellington) beat Yang Low 3-0 in one semi-final. Yang had beaten Dave Cheung 3-1 in his quarterfinal.

Rob Chung beat Min Su 3-1 sets in the other semi-final.  In their quarterfinals, Min Su had a very close 3-2 sets win against Martin Young and Rob beat Zhidong Yu 3-1.

In the final, Rob upset Fiona in a close match 3-2 (9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 3-11, 11-9).

In a playoff for 3rd/4th, Yang beat Min 3-0 .

There were 4 women in the Womens singles – Fiona Zhai, Xiaoping Lu, Qing Lan Feng, and Ling Wang.  A round robin was played with Fiona comfortably winning.  Qing Lan Feng came 2nd with 2 wins and Ling Wang was 3rd with 1 win.

2014 TTSPORTS Wellington Autumn Open

Thanks to all who participated in the 2014 TTSPORTS Wellington Autumn Open, including the Manawatu players that travelled down to play.

The mens singles final was won by Matt Ball, of Manawatu.  He beat Axel Schorradt 4-0 in the final.  Axel, from Germany, was in Wellington before travelling to Auckland to play in the World Veterans Championships.

Unfortunately, no women entered in the tournament.

Wellington Junior Development Tournament – Sept 2011

A second Wellington Junior Development tournament was held on Sunday Sept 11, 2011 at Empire Stadium.

Another successful tournament where Wellington’s developing players were on display.  This included many players from the successful Silver and Bronze level coaching groups. Thank-yous to The Southern Trust for helping support the Silver group and to Pelorus Trust for helping support the Bronze group.

Thanks to all the juniors who played  in the tournament, all in very good spirit.  It was also great to see all the girls who entered – well done for playing, girls! 

In a first ever for a Wellington tournament, we had a brother sister sibling final.  The Under 17 Mixed Singles final was contested between Ellen Xiong and brother, Adam.  And it was the younger sibling Adam who prevailed in the final.  Well done to both Xiongs for contesting a brother vs. sister final! 

Thanks to Bruce Northover and Paul Escott for running the tournament, with great assistance from Alan Costley.

Wgtn New Chinese Friendship Association Table Tennis Tournament

There were 24 entries in the 9th annual Wellington New Chinese Friendship Association Table Tennis tournament, held on Saturday 25 June at the Empire Table Tennis Club (Petone). The organisers were association committee members Kate Wang, Jon Chen and Clara Zhang, with assistance from Frank Su.

The Open Singles was held in the morning. In a repeat of last years final, Catherine Zhou won 3-0 against Robert Chung. Catherine was too strong for all the other men in the field and won all her matches relatively comfortably to claim the title.

In the 3rd place playoff, Martin Young beat Harry Chen 3-0.

In the afternoon, the teams event was held. In the final, Team Imei ( Catherine Zhou, Delano Lam and Frank Su) beat Team Extreme ( Robert Chung, Kai Xu and Tony Law).  Team Imei won the first 3 singles matches of the best of 5 match contest to quickly seal the title.  Catherine Zhou again beat Robert Chung (3-1), Delano Lam beat Kai Xu (3-1) and Frank Su beat Tony Law (3-2).  A great all-round effort by Team Imei.

The junior singles was won by Ian Wang.  Ellen Xiong (competing against the boys) came second and Jason Zhao came third.  Congratulations Ian, Ellen and Jason!

A big thank you to the Wellington New Chinese Friendship Association and the very hospitable organisers for holding this tournament.  An enjoyable day of table tennis was had by all!
