There were 24 entries in the 9th annual Wellington New Chinese Friendship Association Table Tennis tournament, held on Saturday 25 June at the Empire Table Tennis Club (Petone). The organisers were association committee members Kate Wang, Jon Chen and Clara Zhang, with assistance from Frank Su.

The Open Singles was held in the morning. In a repeat of last years final, Catherine Zhou won 3-0 against Robert Chung. Catherine was too strong for all the other men in the field and won all her matches relatively comfortably to claim the title.
In the 3rd place playoff, Martin Young beat Harry Chen 3-0.

In the afternoon, the teams event was held. In the final, Team Imei ( Catherine Zhou, Delano Lam and Frank Su) beat Team Extreme ( Robert Chung, Kai Xu and Tony Law). Team Imei won the first 3 singles matches of the best of 5 match contest to quickly seal the title. Catherine Zhou again beat Robert Chung (3-1), Delano Lam beat Kai Xu (3-1) and Frank Su beat Tony Law (3-2). A great all-round effort by Team Imei.

The junior singles was won by Ian Wang. Ellen Xiong (competing against the boys) came second and Jason Zhao came third. Congratulations Ian, Ellen and Jason!
A big thank you to the Wellington New Chinese Friendship Association and the very hospitable organisers for holding this tournament. An enjoyable day of table tennis was had by all!

Hello all, this is the 100th post to the Table Tennis Wellington blog! We had a big contribution from Andrew Hubbard with some great schools reports and photos to get the ball rolling early. Since then we’ve had a couple of other contributors but usually it is just general news or material anyone sends me and I’ll put it up with minor edits. It works better though if many people contribute either sending to me or creating a wordpress login and posting direct (see here). Anything TT and Wgtn related belongs here so feel free to contribute. My favourites are player profiles that Malcolm has done so let’s see some more of these, including from the junior ranks so get writing!
Full tournament results were published here. Malcolm won the Over 50 Men’s Singles, and the Over 40 and Over 50 Men’s Doubles. This takes his Nelson titles to 18 and he has 68 in total! Malcolm reports that the tournament was well run due to the efficient organisation of Paul Op de Buysch, Donny Harris, Chris Hood and Debbie Stratford. Also his thanks to Karen Holmes and her team (Noelene Wells, Kay Hazeldine, and Dianne Watson) for running the cafeteria (presumably Malcolm has fond memories of the cafeteria!).

From Canterbury Table Tennis Association:
This is a reminder that the Canterbury Open is on Saturday and Sunday, the 9th and 10th of July 2011. The number of entries last year was a record and the standard of players and competition was fantastic. This year the Men’s finalists will share $1,000 and the Women’s finalists will share $500 prize money. Please visit our website for nearby accommodation options and the Entry Form and Info.
Entries Close Thursday 30 June 2011.
The Table Tennis stadium, surrounding suburbs (Riccarton Mall, local motels etc), Airport and generally our whole side of town have been largely unaffected by the earthquakes and aftershocks. If you fly in, drive to the TT stadium, stay anywhere nearby, visit the Mall etc you will not even know we have had earthquakes (If you especially visit the CDB or drive to the other side of town (eastern suburbs) you will then see the impact of the earthquake on old buildings, and liquefaction damage to roads and properties). The media only highlight the sad and sensationalist effects. Life after the quakes was quickly back to normal for most of us in Christchurch.
Please contact the stadium (03) 341 5561 if you have any queries.
Sincerely
Canterbury Table Tennnis Association.

The new 2011 Code of Coduct document: 2011 Code of Conduct

It all started way back in 1952 when Warren (10 years old) went to a coaching session at the Taita Table Tennis Club run by the English Coach, Ken Stanley. His father, Vincent, a Life Member of the then Hutt Valley Table Tennis Association, was his first coach. Both Warren and his younger brother, Barry, keenly took to the game and improved rapidly.
Warren had an outstanding junior career, winning five New Zealand Junior Titles, including the Under 16 Boys Singles (1956) and Under 18 Boys Singles (1958). In 1957, on the same day, his brother Barry won the North Island Under 16 Boys Singles while Warren won the South Island Under 16 Boys Singles.
Warren went on a table tennis OE to England (1960-62). He joined the Putney Club in London where he meet World Men’s Singles Champions Victor Barna and Johnny Leach. He played in a number of interclub leagues during the week and won the Willesden League Men’s Singles (1962). Warren formed an excellent doubles combination with South African, Derek Wall (who was to represent England and Canada). They won the Men’s Doubles at the North of England (Manchester) and West of England (Exeter) Tournaments in 1962. The highlight of the trip was playing in the European Champions (1962) in Berlin.
On his return to New Zealand Warren showed the benefit of playing overseas by twice beating former Australian Champion, Geoff Jennings, in Wellington interclub (1962). He was a member of the Wellington Team which won the New Zealand Men’s A Grade Teams Title in 1962 and 1963.
Warren then joined the Empire Club and was in teams that won 6 Hutt Valley A Grade interclub titles (1964-67, 1969 and 1972). He has won the Empire Club Men’s Singles on four occasions in four different decades (1965, 1986, 1990 and 2002). He won the 1972 Wellington Open Men’s Singles.
The highlight of his table tennis career was reaching the New Zealand Open Men’s Singles Final in 1970. He beat Gary Frew (Last 16), Richard Lee (Quarter finals) and Alan Tomlinson (Semi finals) before losing to Gary Murphy (Otago) in the final 21-15 16-21 17-21 17-21.
As a veteran Warren won the New Zealand Open Over 35 Men’s Singles (1986) and Over 45 Men’s Singles (1988 & 1990). He also won the Over 40 Men’s Singles (1988) at the NZ Veterans Championships.
Warren is still a keen member of the Empire Table Tennis Club and has a great knowledge of all aspects of table tennis and is currently on the Table Tennis Wellington executive committee.

L/R rear: Barry Radford (Men’s Singles winner, Mixed Doubles winner with Audrey Eden),
Warren Evans, Peter Thompson (Men’s Doubles winners)
front: Miss Audrey Eden (Women’s Doubles winner with J Sara),
Miss Jennifer Sara (Women’s Singles winner)

Empire Club team: L/R Warren Evans, Malcolm Evans, Keith Pointon
Clubs are invited to submit entries for the 2011 winter interclub season.

27/28 Sept Grade champs for Premier 2, 3 & B grades

Venue & Start Time
All matches will be played at the Empire Stadium, Marine Parade, Petone. The stadium will be open from 6:30pm each interclub night and interclub matches are scheduled to start at 7:00pm. Team captains/players need to pay the team’s night fees and provide the playing order (Premier 1 only) to the duty official before the score sheet will be given out.
It is still a key objective for TTW to ensure interclub contests finish at a reasonable time. Would all teams please be aware of their responsibilities in this area.
Teams
Teams consist of three or more players of a similar ability. While only three players from a team can play singles in a contest, a fourth player can be introduced to play in the doubles matches only, regardless of the score in the contest, in place of one of the singles players.
Combined club teams may be allowed, therefore, clubs can enter individuals or pairs of players. All teams are subject to the approval of the TTW Interclub Subcommittee.
Format
The final format is subject to team numbers – it is intended to play eight team grades, if at all possible, over two separate competitions as occurred last year (Series 1 and 2). Grading matches, for all grades, maybe held prior to the beginning of both Series 1 and 2 competitions if required, and at the discretion of the TTW Interclub Subcommittee.
Teams will play 1 contest each week, consisting of 11 matches; three singles for each player and two doubles for the team. Matches will be best of five advantage games to 11 points.
For example – an eight team grade:
Play a round robin competition of 7 weeks followed by semi finals and/or final, have one week off then a further competition of 7 weeks culminating in semi finals, then the grade championships the week after and a finals night a further week on for all grades. The senior nationals begin the week after that.
After the Series 1 round robin competition TTW will call for new entries re Series 2. Any applications for regrading players to a lower grade must be submitted to the interclub subcommittee for approval, at least five days before Series 2 commences. Additional teams may be entered/accepted, at the discretion of the interclub subcommittee and subject to an available slot in an appropriate grade.
Grade championships will be held for Premier 2, 3 and B grades on 27/28 September. All grade championships are dependent on entries and TTW reserves the right to alter the format to ensure equitable contests.
Conduct
The TTW Code of Conduct will be enforced in all interclub matches.
Ball
TTW requires the use of the – TTNZ adopted – Stag 3 star white ball in all interclub contests. This ‘approved’ ball will be supplied, at no charge, for all interclub contests.
Points
Assuming the use of a format that has playoffs at the end of round robin play, the following points system will be used in all grades:
2 points for a win
1 bonus point for teams losing 5-6
1 bonus point for teams winning a contest 10-1 or 11-0
If the format used is a round robin contest only ie: no playoffs, then the following points system will be used:
2 points for a win
0 points for all losses
With reference to the TTW Code of Conduct; TTW interclub contest points may be taken off teams whose players persistently ignore the requirements of the Code of Conduct re the ‘new’ 3 strikes rulings and/or are involved in more serious breaches of the Code. While serious breaches will require formal proceedings, lesser offences will be dealt with immediately under the ‘3 strikes’ policy.
Further action may be taken against individual players involved in breaches of the Code of Conduct.
Matches will be recorded and used to determine final/playoff places in each series, if two or more teams are equal on points.
Fees
The team registration fee will remain the same as last year, $12.00 per team.
Night Fees – No change from last year.

Empire Vets Tournament 2011
First a big thank you to Chris Williams for doing all the pre-tournament planning and excellent organisation of the events on the day. Everything went very smoothly, the atmosphere was good and there were some enjoyable round robins and matches until mid-afternoon when unfortunately Merv Allardyce collapsed. Everyone rallied to help and special thanks must go to Melanie Armstrong who performed CPR before the ambulances (2) arrived. We are pleased to say Merv, although still in Wellington Hospital at the time of writing, is now doing well. Most people carried on playing although the atmosphere was not the same after Merv’s collapse.
Thanks must also go to our prize sponsors Graeme Jackson and Opus for 6 bottles of wine and to Paul Solt for the 4 bat cleaning kits. Additional prizes were purchased. Light refreshments provided by Maggie Dyer were available on the day – bread rolls, fruit and homemade slices.
We are pleased to announce the results:
