2010 WELLINGTON OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

July 31. Spectators were treated to an impressive display from Wellington’s Lin Zhou(Catherine Zhou) , beating Manuawatu’s Natalie Paterson in a close seven set encounter.  Lin won the first set 11-9, dropping the next two sets 6-11, 7-11.  Patterson, a right handed attacking player with strong counter hit and topspin loops and a variety of heavy forehand spin serves had Wellington’s Lin Zhou under a lot of pressure.  Lin is a left handed penhold player with a high toss serve , she plays close to the table using  short pimple rubber on the forehand and smooth rubber on the reverse side which she sometimes twiddles and uses in combination with her high toss serve.  Lin equalised by winning the fourth set 12-10.  Patterson won the sixth set and led  6-2 in the seventh set before Lin fought back to equalise at 6 all, before going onto to win 11-8, adding a fourth Wellington Open Women’s singles title to her name.

Auckland’s Oliver Scarlett was the winner of the 2010 Wellington Open Men’s Singles title defeating Wellington’s Philip McConnochie 4 sets to one in the final. In the quarter finals Scarlett defeated Auckland’s Aaron Gong 11-8,11-8,13-11,12-10. In the semi-final he defeated Waikato’s James Harter 4-2. Earlier Harter had  defeated North Harbours Mitchell Barker 4-o in the quarter final match.  Barker had previously shown good fighting qualities defeating Wellington’s Hayden Tapp 4-3 with Tapp unable to capitalise on a 3-1 lead. In the other side of the draw  North Harbours Craig Dye defeated Thom Nyugen 4-2  in one quarter final while Wellingtons in form  Philip McConnochie defeated Callum Rusbridge 4-3 before going on to defeat Dye in the semi final.

Eric Tindill

Eric Tindill, who died on Sunday 1 August aged 99, was the first Treasurer of the Wellington Table Tennis Association (1933) and a Life Member.

He is better known as one of seven ‘Double All Blacks’ and the only one to play rugby and cricket tests for New Zealand. Eric represented NZ at rugby (1935-38) and played one test against England (1935) as a five eight. He played 5 cricket tests for NZ (1937-47) as a wicket keeper and did manage to catch the great Australia batsman, Sir Don Bradman, off the bowling of Jack Cowie in NZ v South Australia (1937). He also refereed three rugby tests (1950 v Lions (2), 1955 v Australia) and umpired a cricket test (1959 v England).

Eric was inducted into the NZ sports hall of fame (1995) and was officially recognised as a legend of Wellington sport (2005).  He also represented Wellington at football and table tennis.

Eric retained a keen interest in table tennis and attended many Wellington Table Tennis Association AGMs.

Table Tennis for Fun and Table Tennis for Blood

"Chess for Fun and Chess for Blood" by Edward Lasker

The title of the 1942 book: “Chess for Fun and Chess for Blood” (by Edward Lasker) captures the spirit of competitive chess (and indeed any sport) with enthusiasm on one side and yet the innate mortal warfare on the other.

Enjoy the TTSports Wellington Open this weekend everyone!

Nelson Open Report

A report on the recent Nelson Open (June 25/26) from Malcolm Wong who won the O40 & O50 MD with Mark Nalder (Nelson) and was r/u in the Second Grade XD with Glenda Ferguson (Nelson).  The Wong/Nalder combination have now won 10 doubles titles and Malcolm Wong has won 65 tournament titles!

This tournament was held at the new Saxton Field Sports Stadium (7,000 sqm) which was built at a cost of $13 million.  Funding has been provided by the Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and the Saxton Field Sports Stadium Society.  There are 5 basketball courts in the main part of the complex, which is also used for netball, volleyball and handball.  Table tennis is in a separate part of the complex. There are 8 tables and there is heating to regulate the temperature inside.  There is an office, table tennis shop and cafeteria on the ground floor and seating upstairs.

Bryan Keane ran the tournament with his normal efficiency, with Paul Op Den Buysch operating the Xpand2Play system on the computer and Daryl Jones (Marlborough) writing out the certificates. Play started 9am on the Saturday and finished 10.30pm. Having group play for all events meant a longer day than usual.

Canterbury players dominated the Open events. Simon Fenwick won the MS against William Pringle 4-2  Pringle/Chris Erskine (Nelson) won the MD against Fenwick/Nalder(Nelson) 3-1  Jenny Hung beat Megan Stratford (Marlborough) in the WS 4-0 Hung/Tracey Deeley (Nelson) won the WD and Hung/Fenwick won the XD.  Veteran Mark Nalder played in 7 finals, winning the O40 & O50 MS and MD, and was r/u in the MD and Second Grade MS & MD.

In the U/18 Boys team event the TTW team had a 5-0 win over Canturbury,  next we played Tahiti who defeated us 3-2 despite Thom Nguyn leading  the way for Wellington with a  clear 3-0 win over Oceania top 5 U/18 ranked Ocean Belrose and a second singles win.  Later in the day the U/18 team went down 3-2 to the visiting Victorian team and again Thom Nguyen performed well with  a 12-10 win in the fifth over Edward Anderson-Higginson and a win over Brodee Cookson.

The U/15 boys showed a lot of determination throughout the day recording a 3-2 win over the Auckland ‘B’ team with Conal Warrender winning two singles and Matthew Sheppard clinching the match with a 3-2 win over Eugene Yao. The big match was against the North Harbour team with the winner likely to progress through to the final against Auckland ‘A’.  Conal Warrender started well with a 3-2 win, Matthew Sheppard then lost a close match 1-3 before teaming up with Caleb Magan to play a blinder in the doubles. Wellington won the doubles to lead 2-1. The next two matches produced some great table tennis but unfortunately the contest ended in a 3-2 win for the North Harbour team.

Wellington made a good start in the Under 15 girl’s ‘A’ grade competition with a 5-0 win against North Harbour ‘B’ .  11 year old Angela Chapmen recorded her first victory at National level pairing with Maddy Nash in a 3-0 doubles win and then defeated  Iris Liu 3-0 to make it two wins.
