Karori Table Tennis Club – Training in the VIP room

On Monday 10 May TTW Coach Andrew Hubbard carried out a coaching visit to the Karori Club. The Karori club operate out of the Karori Recreational Center, which is just behind the Karori library. Junior and Senior Club run on Monday nights and  are combined with the junior club running from 7.00-8.15pm, with a light supper  afterwards. Seniors start at 8.15pm and go until 10.00pm sharp with the center closing then.

Club Stalwart Jack Ho commented that the club has been running well with good numbers of both juniors and seniors attending the club. He’s excited by some of the young talent coming through at the club including Owen Su, Ben Westenra and David Van Drimmelin.

Andrew carried out two hours of multi-ball training with a number of enthusiastic club members on the new donic tables in the VIP room. Want to know more, get along to one of the Karori clubnights to find out.

Inter primary school competition a big success.

Played at the Waterloo school hall on Wednesday 28th April the annual competion for the central zone  primary schools  was attended by Wellesley College, Eastern Hutt school, Muratai, Waterloo and Saint’s  Peter and  Paul school.  Association stalwarts Alan Costley and Bruce Northover were on hand to make sure all ran smoothly.

TTW Coach Andrew Hubbard was on hand and carried out a demonstration along with former Chinese professional Catherine Zhao which was very well received by students and teachers alike.

Wellesley captured the boys division and Eastern Hutt the girls.

Wairarapa Visit – Red Star Veteran club active and encouraging youth.

At the invitation of the Red Star Veteran Table Tennis Club TTW Coach Andrew Hubbard made a visit to the club which is situated in Masterton to carry out a day long coaching clinic. Des Orange who is the current Secretary and Treasurer organised the visit and explained “The club currently operates on a Tuesday morning from 9-12 and we normally get 20-25 people, on Thursday we have a club night from 5-7 and get 10-15 players along. It’s normally veterans who are encouraging younger players to come along. We play an annual fixture against Tawa and Kapiti Coast and try to support the Wellington vets tournaments.”

When asked for sometime positive that was happening and a negative Des replied ” Something positive is that the players that we do have are really keen and theres a great club spirit. Many of them travel quite a way to get home every week. Our main problem is trying to get people interested in admin roles.”

TTW Coach Andrew Hubbard commented that he enjoyed the visit,  saw a lot of improvement, needed to ‘slow’ a few players down during the ‘crossover’ footwork drills and is looking forward to a return visit.

Empire Club – new Thursday Night

Empire Table Tennis Club is starting a Thursday Night casual play session called “Public Ping Pong”. This commences tomorrow (May 6).

Tables are available for casual use at $4 per person or $10 per family.

The session runs from 7pm to 9pm every Thursday night.

Please invite interested friends, relatives or workmates to come along.
