NZ Juniors Teams Completed & Liam Buckrell Player of the Day!

(liberally extracted from this TTNZ article)

[…] the Wellington Association has had a lot to savour from the opening 3 days of the tournament. The efforts of coaches Hayden Tapp, Depak Patel and Paul Solt are showing rich dividends as their players have kept upsetting more favoured opponents.

Hui Ling Vong finished the under 15 teams event unbeaten, a huge feat, while brother Chun Kiet was also impressive [in the U18s].

In the evening session for under 18 boys, Sean Hanson was most impressive in beating National Junior Nathan Watson in straight sets.

[…]

Jonathan Li (Counties), Liam Buckrell (Wellington)
There were also some exciting and meritorious performances in the closing stages of the teams event, with one match providing our player of the day, Liam Buckrell – from Wellington of course, pictured here with his valiant opponent Jonathan Li from Counties.

These two boys were pitched together at 3-3 in a match which would decide silver in the under 13 boys B Grade. But, from the crowd gathered alongside one could have been forgiven for thinking it was the under 18 boys final. After a very tense fourth set the players shaped up for the deciding set, wondering who would keep their nerve longest.

Jonathan seemed to have prevailed when he stretched out to 10-6 after a number of long counter-hitting rallies. But Liam knuckled down to the job, returning every shot with interest and accuracy, and confounded everybody to triumph 12-10. It seemed a shame there had to be a loser in this contest.

One can only wonder what might have happened if Hayden Tapp had gone out to buy a lotto ticket instead of bench-coaching at this tournament – given the results versus the odds so far.

Berdy Fang ensured that Wellington did not have things all their way today, with two good wins over Frank Fu and Sean Hanson in under 18 boys.

[…]

Some of these juniors certainly know how to entertain and thrill!

2014 New Zealand Institute of Sports Table Tennis Tournament

From Malcolm who helped umpire this event held on May 28 (my apologies for the delay in this report too, time sure flies).

The 2014 New Zealand Institute of Sports Table Tennis Tournament was held at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie. Auckland won all the events after being third last year. There were exciting final matches in the Men’s Singles where Istead beat White 2-1 (11-9 in the 3rd) and Mixed Doubles where Istead & Erihe beat Hira & Galang 2-1 (15-13 in the 3rd). If Wellington had won both those matches instead of Auckland they would have won overall. Thanks to Malcolm Wong and Roger Watkin who were the umpires, and Malcolm Wong who organised the draw and photos.

Results:

1st Luke Istead (Auckland)
2nd Keanu White (Wellington)
3rd Andrew Storer (Christchurch)

Updates from Malcolm Wong: 2014 World Veteran Table Tennis Championships

From Malcolm who was in Auckland as an official at the 2014 World Vets in May.

Over 1600 players completed in the 17th World Veteran Championships held in the Trusts Arena (Henderson) in West Auckland. A great experience in the largest table tennis tournament to be held in New Zealand and an excellent venue. There were many volunteers that helped to make the tournament run successfully. Access to the Stadium was only allowed on Friday 9 May at 9 pm and volunteers worked until 5am to lay down the Stag Flooring. Also the tables that were put up to allow the players to practice in the weekend were taken down for the opening ceremony on Sunday night and then were put back up which took to midnight.

I was a Table Manager (Monday and Tuesday) for group play in singles and doubles where 59 tables were used. Then i umpired from Thursday to Saturday. I umpired the Over 50 Women Singles final and the Over 60 Men’s Doubles final on Saturday afternoon. I was also the counter for a expedite match in the Over 75 Men’s Singles Final which was the last match to finish.

A number of Wellington players qualified for the main draw in the Men’s Singles. They were Heath Murdoch (Over 40), Chris Talbot (Over 50), Ian Talbot (Over 60), Merv Allardyce (Over 80) and Eddie Moore (Over 80). Eddie Moore was the only player to win a match in the main draw when he beat Ichimura Saburo (Japan) 3-0. Chris and Ian Talbot qualified for the main draw in the Over 50 Men’s Doubles where they lost a close match 2-3. Merv Allardyce and Eddie Moore were runner up in the Over 80 Men’s Doubles Consolation Final.

Thanks to Terry Cockfield who supplied me with the photo of the group of umpires and of Merv Allardyce and Eddie Moore playing a doubles match.

June 2014 Junior Development Tournament Report

A small attendance for the first of the 2014 Development Tournaments (held yesterday, June 15) but this helped ensure plenty of table tennis for those who participated. Special mention should be made of three players from Manawatu who journeyed down for the day.

All players were of a good standard with several making their first tournament appearances. With players giving of their best, the constant play against good opposition saw games that were enjoyable to watch for the good number of spectators. Several players improved noticeably with the experience and should take encouragement from their efforts.

All players should be congratulated for their play and their willingness to umpire when not playing and we look forward to seeing them all at future tournaments at this and higher levels.

Wanganui Open

On Saturday (26 April) I unexpectedly had what turned out to be the privilege of taking five of our Junior players to Wanganui to play in the Wanganui Open.

An unfortunate illness for coach Paul Solt who had organised to take these young men meant an early morning SOS call to see if I could please drive them up and back (in his van) to compete as entered!

So I took Adam Xiong, Frank Fu, Gareth Telfer, Marcel Kurz and Sean Hanson on a road trip to Wanganui and back in a day.

I am delighted to say, that as I told them in the van coming back, I was very proud of the way they all behaved, played and competed and even though it was a competition for individuals they all did Wellington proud. It was a constant question throughout the day as to where these young fellows came from and the older players they competed against in the Open events were very impressed with their skills, attitudes and general demeanour. They were polite to their elders and (mostly – eh Frank) listened when I talked to them about the importance of staying fed and hydrated!

As an added bonus our players came back with a number of placings – and some  prize money jingling in their pockets – though I don’t think any of it will ever be returned to the person who paid their entry fees.

Our results from the tournament were:

Men’s Open runner up:                      Frank Fu

Men’s Open doubles runners up:       Frank Fu and Sean Hanson

Men’s Open Plate winner:                  Gareth Telfer

Under 18 winner:                                Sean Hanson

Under 18 runner up:                           Frank Fu

Under 18 Doubles winners:                Gareth Telfer and Sean Hanson

Under 18 Doubles runners up:            Adam Xiong and Frank Fu

Under 15 winner:                                Frank Fu

Under 15 runner up:                           Adam Xiong

Congratulations to you all and thanks for a great day out.
