South Island Table Tennis Championships (13 August 2011)

A report from Malcolm Wong on his recent trip down south…

Malcolm in action
There were over 50 players at this tournament held at the Bayfield High School Gymnasium (Dunedin). Playing conditions were good. Play started 8.30am and finished at 11.30pm. Only 2 players were from the North Island and it was disappointing that the top Canterbury players did not support this event. The Cafeteria was at the Guthrie Pavillion, which was not ideal as it in a different building and then only open to 2pm. For doubles the same colour shirt rule for both players was enforced at this tournament. As often players put partner required, a common shirt such as blue, should be in the conditions. Former New Zealand Champions Bryan Foster and Yvonne Fogarty were among the spectators

The Open winners results are published here. Singles winners/runnerups are on the TTNZ site.

Malcolm Wong and Stephen Craw (Canterbury) won the Men’s C Men’s Doubles, defeating the top seeds John Fogarty/Dyna Seng 3-0 in the final. Malcolm also won the D Grade Men’s Doubles with Derek Partridge (Canterbury). Malcolm played a wheelchair player for the first time. He was John Marrable (Otago), originally from England, who is a 5th dan black belt in karate.

Thanks to the tournament organisers for all their hard work. Robin Sew Hoy (Tournament Secretary), Barry Ellis (Tournament Manager), Alan Moore (Referee) and Ben Hurr (Assistant Referee). Also thanks to Emma Paton and Ben Duffy for some of the photos.

Winter Interclub Series 2 stats & draw as of Aug 20 (UPDATED)

CORRECTED

The pdf with all the grades is here: 2011 Winter Interclub 0810 UPDATED

UPDATED: After last week’s cancellations the draw WILL REMAIN THE SAME but the missing week’s games will be scheduled for what was previously the grade-champs night (which will be moved) so this coming week (Aug 23/24) the bye is (as originally scheduled) for Waterloo Wasps (P1) and Empire Fiery (P2).

OTHER THINGS ON:

Aug 25 – Onslow club champs start
Sep 15 (Thurs) – Empire midweek doubles tournament

If your club has upcoming events let me know.

Interclub (Tuesday & Wednesday) postponed this week

Due to uncertainty with the weather this afternoon and tonight, and again tomorrow (erring on the side of being conservative) interclub for this week (August 16 & 17) will be postponed – likely just to shift the draw schedule all along 1 week but that is yet to be confirmed.

People are making contacts to let everyone know but if you see this make sure your team members know anyway.

Manawatu Rep Challenges – put your hand up

Last year there was a successful representative challenge event where top teams from Wellington were sent up to challenge equivalent teams in Manawatu (well, not too successful – Manawatu won!). This year will be the same (Saturday Oct 1) but down here in Wellington. This will be a handy event for those going to the Senior Nationals later in October too. Teams will be selected for this at a later date.

This year there we would like to have a “B”/”C”/”D” grade teams matchup with Manawatu too, but in Palmerston North Saturday August 27. Please contact me (secretary [at] ttwellington.org.nz) or Depak or Stephen as soon as possible if you are available for this trip. (If we haven’t gotten to ask you already.) They’ll make a selection from whomever is available.
