Ivan Moffat – A Lifetime Involvement in Table Tennis

Ivan Moffat was born in 1917 in Wellington. He was 97 in August last year and is Table Tennis Wellington’s oldest Vice President. He started playing at age 12 at the Boys Institute in Tasman Street, Wellington. This began a lifetime involvement with table tennis.

During World War 2 Ivan was a private and sapper with the 36th NZ Army Battalion (1941-45) in the Pacific. He borrowed a bat from the Salvation Army and played with his fellow soldiers when there was time.

Ivan played interclub for the St Josephs Club in Mount Victoria. He was in their 1954 winning E Grade Team. In the final St Josephs beat Kilbirnie RSA 12-8. There were 61 teams in E Grade that year, in 8 sections. The next year Ivan was playing C Grade. His team won Section 3 and finished 3rd of 4 teams in post section play. Brian Hearfield (TTW Life Member) recalls that he played against Ivan in B Grade. The St Josephs team also included Jack Dobbs and Bob Gallagher. Bob who played for St Josephs (1957-62) said that Ivan was an attacking player who used the same side of the bat for both forehand and backhand. Bob also said that Ivan was the most awkward player he has played against. Ivan also played in the A Reserve Grade. He later played for St Pats in Kilbirnie. His wife Florence (better known as Florrie or Flossie) was ever present with him on club night and at his interclub matches.

Ivan was on the Wellington Table Tennis Association Executive Committee (1962-73). He was on the Emergency, Tournament and Hall, and Equipment Sub Committees. Ivan was also the Recording Secretary for A-B Grades (1963-73). He was a Junior Selector (1962) and Senior Selector (1963-70). He was the Manager for Wellington Teams in matches against Wairarapa, Canterbury (Clapshaw Trophy) and the Grades Match against Hutt Valley. He was the Manager of the Wellington Teams at the NZ Championships (1963) and Women’s Team (1964-67, 1969-70). Ivan was on the New Zealand Table Tennis Committee (1974).

In the then annual match against Hutt Valley, Ivan was in the Wellington Executive Team (1962,1963,1965,1967,1969 & 1972), C Grade Team (1955) and A Reserve Team (1971 & 1973). The Executive Team won 10-2 (1963) 12-0 (1967) 7-5 (1969) 11-1 (1972) and the A Reserve Team won 8-4 (1971) and 7-5 (1973). Ivan won the Wellington Open Veteran Men’s Singles (Over 45) on 4 occasions (1963,1965, 1966 and 1968). Ivan is a qualified National Umpire. At the New Zealand Championships, Ivan was Deputy Referee (1965), Assistant Referee (1979) and Referee in 1986,1988, 1991, 1996 and 1998. Former Wellington coach Paul Escott said that at the New Zealand Championships, Ivan (Tournament Referee) proudly worn his Wellington blazer. His wife Florence was there at the tournaments with him until she passed away in December 2004.

Ivan left Wellington to move to Papakura, Auckland in July, 1978. He joined the Papakura Club and continued playing and being an official. He was rewarded for his services by being made a Life Member of the Auckland Association (1994), Papakura Club (2005) and Counties Association (2013). Ivan is the Patron of the Papakura Table Tennis Club since 2008 and the joint Patron of the Counties Association. There was a story in the Papakura Courier in 2007 when Ivan won the Papakura Club Doubles at the age of 90. A fellow Auckland Committee member referred to him as always strict but fair. He had an engaging personality and was always able to communicate with all ages and all types. As Referee he would ensure that the playing conditions were right. He would check that the barriers were in their right place, and that the net heights were correct at the start of each session. Ivan had a true love for the game.

Ivan played table tennis until he was 94. He said that table tennis had helped him maintain his coordination and fitness in his life. He was a visitor at the 2014 World Veteran Table Tennis Championships in Henderson, Auckland. Ivan enjoys seeing his family: his son Keith and wife Eunice, 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Ivan has moved into a rest home in Papakura in 2014.

Thanks to information from Ivan Moffat, Eunice Moffat, Val Beaver, Paul Escott, Bob Gallagher, Brian Hearfield and the Papakura Courier. Photos below are from Eunice Moffat, The Table Tennis New Zealand Archives and from the 2014 World Veterans Championships site.

Junior and Regional Umpires Exam

How well do you know the rules of table tennis?

You can sit either the TTNZ Junior (Under 18) or the Regional Written Exam Paper and find out!

The Junior (Under 18) and Regional Umpire Written Exam is attached. The written exam is open book. People can take as much time as is required to complete the Written Exam. The required pass mark is 80% which means that people sitting the Junior Umpires Exam will need to answer 24 out of the 30 questions correctly and people sitting the Regional Umpires Exam will need to answer 48 out of 60 questions correctly.

For people sitting the exam please complete the Written Exam in pen so that the writing can be read easily. People can scan the completed paper and email to me at m-wong@clear.net.nz or send the paper to P O Box 1528, Wellington 6140.

I have also attached the Handbook for Match Officials which may come in use when answering some of the questions. People will definitely need to refer to the ITTF Rules and Regulations to complete the Written Exam.

Once people have passed the Written Exam I will need to arrange for them to have a practical assessment to complete the Junior or Regional Umpire qualification.

2014 Nelson Open (27-28 September)

While I’m on a roll with posts tonight, here is a backlog travel report of the earlier Nelson Open:

Malcolm Wong won the Over 60 Men’s Doubles (with Mark Nalder) and was runner up in the Over 60 Mixed Doubles (with Glenda Ferguson) and Over 50 Men’s Doubles (with Mark Nalder). Malcolm has now won titles at the Nelson Open for 10 consecutive years. This win takes his Nelson Open titles to 21 and is his 13th title with Mark Nalder.

This tournament was late in the season and entries were low (31). The event was held in the weekend before the NZ Open Championships. So an earlier date will probably result in more entries. The tournament report is attached.

Thanks to the organisers, Robin Knight and Michael Holmes (Tournament Controllers), Paul Op den Buysch (Xpand2play), Kay Hazeldine (Certificates and Finance) and Rebecca Nesbitt (Finance). Also to the Cafeteria Ladies, Karen Holmes, Katharine Ritchie and Noelene Wells. More photos of the players are on the TTNZ photo archives.

Over 60 Men’s Doubles finalist. Alan Alabaster, Brian Wilson (Runner up), Malcolm Wong, Mark Nalder (Winners). Malcolm and Mark won 3-2 (6-11 11-9 11-8 9-11 11-8)
Over 60 Men’s Doubles finalist.

2014 Titan Club Championships

A report by Malcolm Wong

Double Strike at both Singles and Doubles

Lindsay Ward dominated the Club Singles and Over 40 Singles. Depak Patel and Paul Brown did likewise in the Doubles. The Championships were held on 4 consecutive Sundays (November 9, 16, 23 and 30).

The Club Singles (9 November) was won for the 9th time by Lindsay Ward, who defeated the titleholder Ben Collins in the final 4-2 (13-11 11-9 9-11 11-7 12-14 11-7). In the semi finals Lindsay Ward beat Paul Brown in a tough struggle 4-2 (9-11 14-12 18-16 11-8 12-14 15-13) and Ben Collins beat Depak Patel 4-2 (6-11 7-11 11-5 11-7 11-2 11-4). Depak Patel had won the Empire Club Singles the previous Sunday against Ian Talbot 3-0. In one of the Quarter Finals Paul Brown beat Ian Talbot 3-1 (11-9 8-11 11-6 11-1) which reversed the result of the Empire Club Singles semi finals won by Ian 3-2. The Singles Plate was won by Gray Hodgkinson against Kung Tepp 3-1 (13-11 5-11 11-8 11-9). Gray is originally from Hamilton and was a former Hamilton Representative (1974-76).

The Over 40 Singles (16 November) was won for the 9th time by Lindsay Ward who defeated Depak Patel 4-2 (11-8 11-8 8-11 11-9 7-11 13-11). In the semi finals Lindsay Ward beat Paul Brown 4-2 (11-4 8-11 9-11 11-9 11-7) and Depak Patel beat Ian Talbot 4-0 (11-9 11-9 11-9 11-9). The Over 40 Singles Plate was won by Ryan Cronin against Gray Hodgkinson 3-2 (11-9 10-12 11-9 8-11 14-12). Ryan is Canadian and played interclub in Division 1 for Titan.

The Club Doubles (23 November) was won by Depak Patel and Paul Brown who beat Chris and Ian Talbot 3-2 (11-7 9-11 2-11 11-9 11-8). This reversed the result of their group match won by Chris and Ian 3-1 (25-23 5-11 11-9 11-8). Depak and Paul had won the Empire Club Doubles earlier this year. In the semi finals Depak and Paul beat Ben Collins and Lindsay Ward 3-1 and Chris and Ian Talbot beat Martin Young and Zidong Yu 3-1. Depak Patel now holds the record for Titan Doubles outright with 5, one ahead of Malcolm Wong and Ian Talbot.

The Over 40 Doubles (30 November ) was a round robin which was won by Depak Patel and Paul Brown ahead of Chris and Ian Talbot. Depak and Paul won the crucial match against Chris and Ian Talbot 3-1.

The trophies were presented at the Titan breakup on Sunday, 14 December. There were also cups for Hugh McIlwrath, who was awarded the Over 80 Singles Cup, and Robert Chung was awarded the Presidents Cup for services to the Titan Club. Much thanks to Tony Tziakis for organising the food and drinks. Of special note was the cake which represented a table tennis table and 2 bats and balls (see photo below). Also thanks to Raewyn Young for the club sandwiches.

2014 Wellington New Chinese Friendship Association Table Tennis Tournament (Dec 7)

A report from Malcolm Wong
2014WgtnNewChineseFriendshipAssnTT_1
The tournament was held at the Empire Club in Petone. There was a brother/sister double success as Chun-Kiet Vong won the Singles and Hui-Ling Vong won the Women Singles. A triumph for these two juniors who play Premier Grade in the Wellington Interclub Competition. Only the singles were held this year with insufficient time to hold the teams event.

In the Singles Chun-Kiet Vong beat Catherine Zhou in the final 3-0 (11-9 11-7 11-8). Catherine raced to an early lead in the first game only for Chun-Kiet to come back and narrowly win the first game. He was in command in the next 2 games, showing the form that won him this years North Island Under 18 Boys Singles. The Semi-Finals saw Chun-Kiet Vong beat Martin Young 3-0 (11-4 11-8 11-8) and Catherine Zhou beat Hui-Ling Vong 3-1 (9-11 11-6 13-11 11-6). Martin Young won the playoff for 3rd place when he beat Hui-Ling Vong 3-1 (11-7 13-11 4-11 11-7).

In the Women Singles Hui-Ling Vong beat Catherine Zhou 3-1 (11-7 4-11 11-6 11-7). A good win for this years NZ Under 13 Girls Singles Champion against the 2012 & 2013 NZ Women’s Double Champion.

The Singles Plate was won by Bong Ting who beat William Tan 3-0 (12-10 11-4 11-5).

Thanks to Gareth Telfer and Ian Wang for running the tournament. Stephen Wang, Chairperson of the New Chinese Friendship Association, presented the prizes.

Retrospective on the TTNZ Nationals

At the recent prizegiving Gabrielle Telfer also touched on the TTNZ Nationals event and the great results and team spirit she observed. Below are reports from both her and Malcolm Wong on the Nationals including photos!

Firstly from Gabrielle

Senior Nationals – October 2014

What an amazing event!

No I don’t mean the event itself but the way our young ‘A’ team stood up and played their hearts out to finish 6th in the A grade of the Senior National Championships Teams event.

Chun Kiet Vong, Frank Fu and Sean Hanson, captain Ben Collins and coach Hayden Tapp be very, very proud of yourselves. We are.

It all started with the grading match against Waitemata at 8.30am on Wednesday morning which our team won 4-2. This win put the team into Group 1 of the A grade, which brought with it the challenge of three more rounds in that same day. It was no mean feat to play four matches of that intensity over 14 hours. The next match was against Manawatu at 11.30am which our team narrowly lost 3-4.

At 2.30pm they faced Canterbury going down 2-5 and the last match of the day was against the eventual winners of the competition Auckland 1 who managed to scrape in against us 7-0! However there was some outstanding individual and doubles play in all of these matches, where sets were taken off players such as John Cordue and other New Zealand representatives.

The next morning we found our opponents in the crossover round for places 5-8 was North Harbour. These games too proved to be tense and thrilling encounters, and again our team rose to the challenge. The strategy devised by Hayden and Ben proved to be the difference between the two teams and Wellington came out of the match with a 4-3 win!

This result brought us to the 5/6 playoff against Waikato which we lost 4-1. A sparkling doubles match played by Chun Kiet and Sean ensured it wasn’t a complete whitewash. This result I can assure you was a true reflection of just how much energy and passion these four players had put in to their five previous matches – by the end of this one they individually and collectively had nothing more to give. A personal highlight for Sean was taking a Waikato player who is also a current New Zealand Junior representative to 5 sets only to lose it 11-13 in the 5th.

For three young players, two of whom had never been to a Senior Nationals before to pull off the kind of results they did was nothing short of superb. It was a privilege to witness the heart and soul all four players put into their individual games. They certainly left everything on the table!

The team was very ably captained by Ben Collins who led from the front. The team was exceedingly well coached by Hayden Tapp. Ben and Hayden together made strategic decisions that paid off and enabled the team to win games and matches that led them to the playoffs for 5 and 6.

When these players were selected, I wrote in each of their selection letters ‘I look forward to our Wellington players representing us with passion and pride’. They certainly did that.

Congratulations Ben, Chun Kiet, Frank, Sean and Hayden – you did yourselves and Wellington proud! It was an incredible moment to be part of – I am so incredibly proud of you all

Rather unfortunately our ’B’ team was placed in Group A of the B Grade which was well above their collective strengths. However Depak Patel, Gareth Telfer and Paul Solt turned up and played all their matches with much enthusiasm. Unfortunately their results took them to the 7/8 playoff where they again met the Canterbury team and again came second in that match. There were individual victories along the way and all matches were played in a good spirit.

Thank you Depak, Gareth and Paul for the heart you all showed, even though you were well out of your depth. You too represented Wellington with passion and pride!

A thank you also to Malcolm Wong who surprised us in Auckland – Malcolm helped support our teams and took the team photos for us.

Wellington was also represented in the Women’s competition with Hui-Ling Vong playing in a Presidents team with Natalie Paterson and Tetyana Sulimova. The Women’s grade consisted of five teams who played a round robin. There were two Auckland teams, one Canterbury team and two Presidents teams.

In the Individual events three players competed, Ben Collins, Chun Kiet and Hui-Ling Vong. Hui-Ling won the Women’s B Grade and together with Chun Kiet, they were runners up in the Under 21 mixed doubles.
Ben finished third in the Men’s B Grade as well as reaching the semi finals of the Over 30 grade.

Well done all of you – I look forward to what 2015 brings!

– Gabrielle Telfer

And now from Malcolm Wong:

2014 New Zealand Open Championships (1- 4 October)

Sean Hanson - the hero of Wellington Men’s 1 Team 4-3 win over North Harbour in A Grade. He won the deciding 7th match against Michael Zhang 3-1
Sean Hanson – the hero of Wellington Men’s 1 Team 4-3 win over North Harbour in A Grade. He won the deciding 7th match against Michael Zhang 3-1

Wellington entered two Men’s Teams and Hui-Ling Vong was in the draft for a Women’s Team in the New Zealand Championships held in Auckland. Wellington Men’s 2 were in B Grade. Wellington Men’s 1 played in a grading match against Waitemata 1 to decide if they would be in A or B Grade. Wellington 1 beat Waitemata 1 by 4-2. Ben Collins won both his singles and the doubles with Sean Hanson. Chun-Kiet Vong clinched the match beating Max Rogers 3-2.

Men’s A Grade Teams

v North Harbour won 4-3 (playoff for positions 5-8)
v Waitako 1 lost 1-4 (playoff for positions 5-6)

In A Grade Ben Collins was the mainstay of the team winning 5 of his 9 singles, which included winning both his matches against Manawatu and North Harbour. Two of his losses were in 5 games. The juniors found the going tough with Sean Hanson (2/6), Chun-Kiet Vong (1/6) and Frank Fu (1/ 7). The only doubles win was by Sean Hanson and Chun-Kiet Vong against Waitako, with Ben Collins/Sean Hanson (0/4). Thanks to Hayden Tapp who coached the team.

v Waitako 2 lost 2-5 (playoff for positions 5-8)
v Canterbury 3 lost 3-4 (playoff for positions 7-8)

The withdrawal of Robert Chung seriously weakened the team and they would have been more competitive in C Grade. Depak Patel won 4 out of his 10 Singles with Paul Solt (1/10) and Gareth Telfer (0/10). The Doubles were much better with Depak Patel and Gareth Telfer winning both their doubles matches, and Depak Patel/Paul Solt (2/3). In the first match against Canterbury 3 Paul Solt lost his 2 singles in the 5th (14-16 and 10-12). If he had won both those singles the team would have won the match.

Hui-Ling Vong played for Presidents 1 (with Natalie Paterson and Tetyana Sulimova) which finished 4th in the Women’s A Grade Teams. She won 3 of her 8 singles matches and 1 of her 4 doubles.

New Zealand Individuals

In the Open Men’s Singles Group Chun-Kiet Vong had a good win against Craig Dye 3-1 and qualified from his Under 21 Men’s Singles Group by beating the higher rated Bryn Lindsay 3-0. Ben Collins reached the semi finals of both the B Grade Men’s Singles and Over 30 Men’s Singles. Ben beat Craig Dye 3-0 in the last 16 of the B Grade Men’s Singles but lost to Craig 1-3 in the semi finals of the Over 30 Men’s Singles.

Hui-Ling Vong won the Women’s B Grade Singles against Maggie Ngo 3-0 and reached the semi finals of the under 21 Women’s Singles. Chun-Kiet Vong and Hui-Ling Vong were runners up in the Under 21 Mixed Doubles.

International Umpire Malcolm Wong was involved in the judging of the Junior Boy’s Umpiring Award (Alan and Edna McCallum Junior Umpiring Awards). He umpired several matches including a Men’s Singles semi final and the Women’s Singles final.

2014 Business Class Competition Latest Results

… are here:
2014-Business Class results Round 7

and its neck and neck in the middle of the pack with Atomic A vs. Atomic B with A edging ahead with one night to go! Sprout Media untouchable at the top.

Composite Finals and Prizegiving night

Last night in Division 2 The Force (Dean McNicholl, Travis Dyer, Jimi Nelson) justified their top points ranking at the end of the round-robin round with a 7-4 win over Team Grace (Ian Grace, Chris Sutton, Anita Crowe) in the Composite teams finals.

A classic nail-biting finish saw Team Gan (John Gan, Matthew Hobbs, Brendyn Shaw) head off Team Talbot (Ian Talbot, Tony Rutledge, Shane Gibson) in the Division 1 final 6-5 after John beat Ian 19-17 in the 5th game in a 1 vs. 1 clash that went down to the wire and beyond! With Ian fending off around 6 match points to my recollection, John had to save a couple of match points himself before finally coming through.

All this went down as the rest tucked into some pizza and unwound for the evening prior to the prize giving of medals and certificates for the winter and composite teams divisions. Below are a pile of assorted photos from the night.
