Table Tennis Wellington

The first Series of Winter Interclub 2023 finished with the Titan Terriers winning the Premier Division unbeaten, with the Empire Eagles the nearest competition. For the Terriers, it was a true team effort, with all three regular players having strong performances. Particular mention should be made of the evergreen veteran Lindsay Ward who was unbeaten, despite some strong efforts to topple him by other players.

Division Two was won by the Empire Emperors, narrowly from Waterloo Wombats. Again, this was a close competition, coming down to the last night. Sai Murali of Karori Kaboom was unbeaten in her appearances, while Emperor’s Ethan Attewell had an excellent season.

Division Two players had a Grade Championships to conclude the competition with sixteen entrants. The Singles event was taken out by Tony Rutledge who outlasted Andrew Maguire late in the evening. Ethan and Doug Westmoreland were the beaten semi-finalists. Jeremy Evans beat Craig Gear in the Consolation event.

Is happening at the Empire hall from 7pm (no later than 7:10pm) Wednesdays May 17 for six weeks.

FEES                   $8 per player per Wednesday to the duty official before play.

ENTER               by Thurs 9 March via your club or haineskj52@gmail.com (we match extras into composite teams).  A team can have any number of players but only two play per match.

FORMAT           2 Player teams: each team plays two matches (against two other teams) each Wednesday – each team vs. team match is two singles each player (best of 5 to 11) plus a one-set doubles (best of 1 to 11) played only as a tie break if it is 2-all.  i.e. each night you play four singles and sometimes also one or two doubles sets.

We thank the TAB for recently awarding us a grant towards accommodation costs for teams at the recent TTNZ nationals. We are a volunteer-run sport and the annual Nationals is a large expense for us as well as the travelling players and team managers every amount is greatly appreciated!

Manish Ahlawat won the Four Wednesdays November competition for the third consecutive year, comfortably seeing off nearest rivals Depak Patel and Ian Talbot, with Paul Solt and Darrell Brown close behind those two. The minor medal positions were in doubt until the last doubles, following which, it was agreed that Depak placed second by virtue of beating Ian earlier in the competition.

There were many interesting results achieved over the four weeks with a number of players beating higher rated opponents and a couple of young players also catching the eye with their performances. Thanks to all who participated.

Structure

Premier grades (Premier 1, Premier 2) on Tuesdays
* 2-player teams (2 x singles best of 7 & a doubles best of 5)

Division 1 grade on Wednesdays
* 3-player teams (9 singles & 2 doubles matches – as usual)

Division 2 grade on Tuesdays
* 3-player teams (9 singles & 2 doubles matches – as usual)

Teams are entered only from clubs – reach out to your club contact to be included.

Partial teams may be entered and we will endeavour to form composite teams.  Extra players may be entered for a team but only two (for Premier grades) or three (for Division 1 & 2 grades) may play for that team on any specific evening.

We will seed teams and limit the number of teams per grade to eight but each team may request a preferred highest grade.

Each grade will include a round robin with every team playing every other team.

Replacement players can be sourced from a lower grade or as approved by the interclub committee.  E.g. a Premier 2 player can fill in for a Premier 1 team (with another lower grade player filling in for the Premier 2 player’s team).

If a player is deemed to be of a certain standard through being named in a particular grade (and confirmed by the interclub committee at the time of naming teams in Grades), then that player can play any number of fixtures for a higher grade while still continuing to play in the lower grade. However players can fill in for higher grades in only one team during the series.

Entries close Wednesday 11 May. Late entries accepted only to fill byes in grades.

Note: treat this Series 1 as a distinct competition.  There will be a Series 2 (anticipated for after mid-year) however the format for Series 2 is TBD by the TTW interclub committee.  Teams would be re-entered for Series 2 & may be seeded & graded differently than Series 1 effectively this may mean some promotion/relegation vs. Series 1 (with or without playoff TBD).
