TTNZ Nationals – Hui-Ling Vong U15 Champ

The TTNZ Nationals are complete (details @ TTNZ)…

Teams

In the teams we had some great results with our Men’s B Grade team (Ben Collins, Sean Hanson, Hayden Tapp) winning the B Grade after a down-to-the wire 4-3 win over Canterbury in the final claiming the Russell Algie Shield just in time to take off for a flight!

Hui-Ling Vong was drafted into the Manawatu under 18 girls’ team which finished 3rd – winning all her matches bar vs. a dominant Auckland team who took 1st place unbeaten in all their matches.

The under 18 boys’ team of Frank Fu & Sean Hanson, along with drafts of Carl Rodmell & Nathan Geraghty, got 3rd in the A Grade (just behind Waitemata and Auckland) including good wins 5-2 over Manawatu & 4-3 over both Canterbury & Otago.

The under 15 boys’ team of Liam Buckrell & Calvin Li, along with draft Zenith Sayer finished 7th in the A Grade, pipping Otago 4-3 at the end into 8th place.

Individuals

*** Hui-Ling Vong is the under 15 girls’ champion – cleaning up against all opposition!

*** Hui-Ling Vong is also the under 15 doubles champion – with Rachel Li!

Hui-Ling in the under 18 girls’ made it all the way through to the semi-final before bowing out to eventual winner Guiting Lu.

Joanna Roberts (with Joanne Shaw) won Silver in the Open Women’s doubles!

In the boys’ under 18s – Sean Hanson & Frank Fu won their round-robin groups with both making it to the second round of the knockout draw.  In the under 18 boys’ doubles, Sean & Frank battled through to the semi-final.  Likewise Sean played with Hui-Ling in the under 18 mixed doubles – again making it to the semi-final!

Similarly Liam Buckrell and Calvin Li made it past the round-robin phase of the under 15 boys’ event too.  In the doubles they were also semi-finalists – losing only to the eventual winners.

Paul Solt wins the D grade doubles (with Neil Chen)!

(Let me know if any results are missing here.)

Wellington Social Tournament Report

On Thursday September 15 twenty five people came along to the Wellington Table Tennis Stadium in Newtown for a first ever special evening of table tennis that started more casually with ladder-style table tennis where it seemed everyone pretty much got to play everyone else, rotating up or down tables as skill or fate led them.

Once everyone got settled into one side of the hall of the other then we reversed the direction to mix it up all over again, heading to the opposite end of the hall!

Most people who came along are already connected to table tennis through the Table Tennis in Wellington meetup and via table tennis at the Korean Community Centre on Tuesdays.  Some players had played at a high level before with most at an interclub division 2 level and a few who would be at home in division 1.

Later on we rounded up those who wanted to enter a more ‘serious’ style knockout competition to come up with a winner and also a plate (consolation) knockout event for those knocked out in the first round.  The others continued to play free style on the remaining tables.

The knockout event final placings were: 1st: Bhushan, 2nd: Vipul, 3rd: Shubham, 4th: Ilkka and the plate event: 1st: Mark, 2nd: Mau, 3rd: Eugene, 4th: Veeral.

All throughout we had a very friendly atmosphere with games played in good spirits and sportsmanship even with a competitive edge especially during the knockout phases!  For many it was a level of competition that might have been new to them and I think many would have surprised themselves with the play they were able to achieve, all while having fun and would have learned a great deal.

Also people coming along got a bit of a glimpse into table tennis in Wellington as a whole with interclub, tournaments, & business class competitions being potential pathways for those who are interested in those directions.  Most importantly though this kind of event should primarily evolve and grow in a way to meet the needs of social players in Wellington.

Thanks to Ilkka Havukkala and those in the meetup group for helping make this event happen and a special thanks to everyone who came and made this such a fun event!

Results: Junior Development Tournament #1

The first Junior Development Tournament for 2016 took place on 12 June with a good entry of locals and four participants coming down from Manawatu.

All the players had a good number of games and also willingly took on umpiring when requested. Thanks also to Stuart McKinnon, Rob Chung, Tim Wilson, John Kane and Richard Lee for assisting with umpiring duties. Their assistance enabled the players to have several more games and also have the tournament finish earlier than would have been the situation without their help.

Also thanks go to Pub Charity for their support of the venue hire for this event!

Travel Report: NZIS Tournament (May 25)

This tournament report of the 2016 New Zealand Institute of Sports Table Tennis Tournament is from Malcolm Wong.

This was held at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie on Wednesday 25 May, as part of the annual 3 day multi-sport tournament (24-26 May). This is the fifth year table tennis has been held. There were Men’s Singles, Women Singles and Mixed Doubles. There was 1 point for each win. The overall winner depended on the last mixed doubles match between Wellington and Christchurch. Wellington won 2-1 to finish first from Christchurch and Auckland. Wellington retained the title they won last year and have now tied with Auckland (winner in 2012 & 2014). Malcolm Wong was the Referee. He and Robert Chung umpired the matches. Continue reading “Travel Report: NZIS Tournament (May 25)”
