Earlier Malcolm Wong and a few others from Wellington went to the Nelson Open this year and Malcolm kindly filed a report.
Malcolm Wong, with Mark Nalder (Nelson), won the Over 50 and 60 Men’s Doubles and they were runner up in the Over 40 Men’s Doubles. Malcolm reached the semi finals of the Over 50 and Over 60 Men’s Singles. In his Over 50 Men’s Singles Group Malcolm beat the Over 50 and Over 60 Men’s Singles winner Mark Nalder 3-2 (13-11 11-5 13-15 7-11 11-1). His third win over Mark. The first was in the 2005 Marlborough Open Over 50 Men’s Singles final. Malcolm first played in the Nelson Open in 1998 where he won the Over 35 Mixed Doubles with Ulrike Kusche (Canterbury) and the Over 40 Men’s Doubles with Joachim Kusche (Canterbury). His sole singles title there was winning the 2011 Nelson Open Over 50 Men’s Singles.
Ben Collin’s reached the semi finals of the Men’s Singles where he lost to the eventual winner Yi Sien Lin (Canterbury) in a tough seven game struggle. Lin won 9-11 11-4 9-11 11-4 11-5 7-11 11-8. Winners and runner ups of events are attached.
There were 39 entries, which was up from last years total of 31. Thanks to the organisers, Robin Knight and Michael Holmes (Tournament Controllers), Paul Op den Buysch (Xpand2play), Kay Hazeldine (Certificates and Finance) and Glenda Ferguson (Finance). Also to the Cafeteria Ladies, Karen Holmes, Katharine Ritchie, Noelene Wells, Debbie Watson and Dianne Watson. Photos are on the TTNZ photo archives.
Malcolm Wong (International Umpire) ran an umpiring course on the Sunday (14 June). Congratulations to Paul Op den Buysch, Katie Roddis and Ashley Windsor who qualified as Regional Umpires.

You may remember Hui-Ling was heading over to Kiribati for the Oceania Junior Championships & Cadet Challenge. This finished on May 17 and the results are now in – with the TTNZ story here and the ITTF story here (or under the category here).
From the TTNZ page in the individuals section:
It was Hui-Ling’s turn to shine in the individual events finishing with 3 gold medals. A fantastic achievement in her first international competition. Hui-Ling overcame Katherine Li and Georgina Newton from Australia on her way to the final against team mate Zhiying and then partnered with Zhiying to take the Gold in the girls doubles against Rebekah Stanley and Katherine Li and together with Yang Lun overcame their Aussie opponents (Benjamin Gould and Rebekah Stanley) 11-2 in the 5th set in the final of the cadet mixed doubles.Zhiying and Hui-Ling joined forces again defeating the Aussie pairing of Rebekah Stanley and Katherine Li in the final of the Junior Girls Doubles.
In all Hui-Ling won quite a stash of medals to take home:
- Gold in the Junior Girls Doubles (with Zhiyang Cheng)
- Gold in the Cadet Girls Singles
- Gold in the Cadet Girls Doubles (with Zhiyang Cheng)
- Gold in the Cadet Girls Mixed Doubles (with Yang Lun Zhao)
- Bronze in the Junior Mixed Doubles (with Yang Lun Zhao)
- Silver in the Junior and Cadet Girls Team (with Zhiyang Cheng)
A fantastic performance from Hui-Ling and congratulations to her from all of us.
She will next be starring Tuesday nights for the Titan Trail Blazers in winter interclub Series 1!
From the ITTFWorld flickr album, Hui-Ling (second from the left) getting used to wearing NZ rep black:
