I’ve been accumulating a pile of recent interclub pictures from Wednesday nights so here they are. Anyone on Tuesdays feel free to forward pictures to me at secretary[at]ttwellington.org.nz!

A special mention goes to Malcolm’s highlight ‘result of the week’ (well the week before) winner Russell Buchanan who had a surprise upset win over Tony Rutledge!
Hugh was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland (1931). He left school at 14 and worked in the shipyard (2 years). Hugh then served a 5 year apprenticeship to qualify as a baker. His grandfather, Warmington, was a champion baker in Belfast. Hugh lived in Bisley Street and started playing football at 15 for the Bisley Street team as a goalie. Later he played for the Agnes Street Methodist Church team which won Division 2 (1949/50) in the Methodist Church League.
In 1954 Hugh moved to London and loved living in the city. He supported the Arsenal Football Club as he lived near their stadium at Highbury, North London. Hugh watched the team play midweek as he was playing football himself in the weekend. Hugh meet the English singer, Matt Monro, who was a friend of his boss. In 1958 he emigrated to Australia and lived in Redcliffe, near Brisbane. While there, Tommy Steele, the English singer/actor was a guest player for the Annerly Football Club team Hugh played for.
In 1963 Hugh moved to Auckland. Later he moved to Masterton (1977) to set up a bakery. Hugh sold the bakery to Alastair Naysmith (1980) with who he was later to play Wellington interclub table tennis with. Hugh then moved to Timaru, where he has relatives, to set up another bakery. While there he coached the Timaru Girls High School Football first eleven, which won the local competition for 3 consecutive years. He moved to Dunedin (1986) to set up another bakery, and finally to Masterton (1994) where he still lives today.
Hugh started playing table tennis at the Red Star Club in Masterton (1994). Among the players there were Peter Greenlees, who had coached Margaret Hoar (NZ Women Singles Champion 7 times between 1948 and 1957). Peter helped Hugh to significantly improve his table tennis. Hugh said he modelled his game on Peter’s.
Hugh started travelling to Wellington to play at the Titan Club (1998) on Sunday mornings, with Alastair Naysmith, as both were improving and needed to play stronger players. Soon they were playing Wellington interclub (2000-2008) which meant a 3 hour return trip from Masterton.
Hugh’s perseverance paid off and soon he was winning Titan Club Veteran Titles, including the Over 60 and 70 Singles. He started playing tournaments and won the Manawatu Over 70 Men’s Singles (2004). Success came to Hugh in the older age groups in the NZ Veterans Championships. He has won the Over 75 Men’s Singles (2006 & 2008), the Over 75 Men’s Doubles (2006 & 2007) and the Over 80 Men’s Doubles (2013). To paraphrase the current Ping Pong film, you are never too old to win gold medals.
Hugh is a bionic man, with 2 hip and 3 knee replacements. He still plays at the Red Star Club and the Titan Club. Hugh continues to play in the NZ Masters Games (Wanganui) and NZ Veterans Championships. He intends to play at the 2014 World Veterans Tournament in Auckland.

Reg was born in the town of Darwen (1927), which is near Blackburn in Lancashire, England. He left school at 14, and served a 7 year apprenticeship to qualify as a carpenter and joiner. After the war Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa were looking for migrants. Reg wanted to go to South Africa but his older brother, Bill, advised him to go to New Zealand.
He travelled to Wellington, New Zealand by ship (6 weeks) and arrived in September 1949. His first job was at Swansons Joinery Shop (Newtown) and on his first day he meet the late Jack Blackmore (former Titan Club and Wellington President). They made up a table and played table tennis at lunch time and after work. Reg and Jack joined the St Thomas Club (Newtown) and played interclub for them in 1950-51.
In 1952 Reg married Yvonne. Work and family took precedence and he gave up table tennis for the next 20 years. He built his home in Island Bay in his spare time (1954) and still lives in the place today. Reg found time to play football for the Wellington Working Club for a few years. In 1966 Reg formed his own building company, R V Seddon Limited, and built many residential and commercial buildings.
When the Newtown Stadium was built (1971-72) Reg become a member of the stadium club, Titan. He played interclub again. Reg served on the Wellington Table Tennis Association Committee (1976). In 1981 the Wellington Association gave him free life membership of the stadium club, for his volunteer work in improving the lighting and installing the seating at the Stadium. Reg won veterans titles at the Titan Club Championships and at the Wellington Tournament. The highlight of his table tennis was playing for the NZ Over 50 Men’s Team at the 1988 Australian Veteran’s Tournament (Melbourne).
Today Reg is still active but does not play much table tennis. He has a fine singing voice and plays several musical instruments, including the piano, saxophone, clarinet, ukulele and mouth organ. May there be many years ahead for him.

You might recall earlier that TTW were contacted by Northland School who have a couple of table tennis tables but no proper bats and we were after some donations of old bats or usable rubbers.
Thanks to some help we were able to provide some bats with fresh rubbers on them which makes a big difference to these young kids when trying to put some spin on the ball!
In the last week of term 2, Steph sent me a report on the championships they had that week:
We held our table tennis doubles championship today at lunchtime. We had an awesome crowd to watch and it was a tight final: best of three games, went to the third set, the first 2 games had to be played to advantage, a real nail-biter!! We had two great umpires too!
Steph thanked our members for their most generous donation of bats and rubber and said the kids were getting some good topspin and backspin on the ball during the final games, thanks to the new rubber.
With the new term starting tomorrow I’m sure the kids at Northland School are looking forward to getting back to table tennis, oh and school too of course!
Wellington took a squad of 8 players to the New Zealand Junior Nationals this year and every member came home with a medal!
The Under 18 team of Chun-Kiet Vong, Gareth Telfer, Ben Westenra and Ian Wang started their campaign with a grading match against Waikato to try and qualify for the A grade. They fought hard but were beaten 4:1 in the contest. Chun-Kiet won the only singles match. They then moved on to compete in the B grade getting through to the final before going down very closely 3:4 to Auckland 3. Chun-Kiet did exceptionally well winning 100% of his singles matches in B grade!
The Under 15 Team of Frank Fu, Sean Hanson and Adam Xiong did very well in the A grade. They topped there side of the group with wins over North Harbour 5:2, Auckland 2 5:2 and Northland 7:0. In the semi Final they accounted for their local rivals Manawatu 5:2. The final was against Auckland 1 who proved to be too strong however Adam raised his game to beat Roger Wang (one of Auckland’s best) to save us a from a white wash and result of 1:4. No other teams got a match off Auckland 1.
Hui-Ling Vong ended up as a draft player in two teams. Cook Islands in the under 13’s and North Harbour in the under 15’s. She was the star player in both teams. The Cook Islands team finished in 3rd place and Hui-Ling then enjoyed the extra support from the Cook Islands players and families for the rest of the tournament! North harbour finished 2nd in a round robin competition with Auckland, Canterbury and New Caledonia. Auckland won, but not before Hui-Ling took a very well fought win over her long time rival Nai Xin from Auckland (for the 1st time!) The teams events concluded with medals all round. It was a great effort and an outstanding result.
Thanks must go out to Hayden Tapp who assisted me with enthusiasm and quality in his coaching role and to Gabrielle Telfer for her management and cooking skills. Everyone was well fed and on time to every event. Also a mention to Sophie Telfer for her help to us all and to Till Armbruster (The Telfer’s homestay student) who unfortunately couldn’t play for us, but was a great team member, camera operator and hitting partner for the rest of the team.

I’f I’m decoding the text messages I’ve received from Gabrielle correctly, the TTW U18 B Grade boys’ team (Chun-Kiet Vong; Gareth Telfer; Ben Westenra; Ian Wang) finished second and the U15 A Grade boys’ team (Sean Hanson; Frank Fu; Adam Xiong) finished second too! Congratulations to the teams, sounds like some good play along the way so we’ll look forward to some stories and pictures on your return! (Individual events follow the teams.)

For Premier, Belmont Bang is ahead of Titan and we’re about half way through the Premier competition.
Series 2 for the Division (and Junior) grades starts August 6/7 but grade champs are tonight.
Remember that for the Division grades (1/2/3) Series 1 is now complete (results to be posted up) but next week (July 9/10 Tues/Wed) will be the Grade Championships event (one event per grade on the normal night for each grade). This is a non-team ‘tournament-style’ event to see who can be No. 1 in their division so be sure to come along. The format usually starts with several round-robins with the top 1 or 2 going through to the knock-out rounds (entries on the night will determine the exact format).
Division 1 and 3 folks are on Wednesday, Division 2 on Tuesday. You can play in the grade you are playing in and you may also play in a higher division should you wish!
The Grade Champs are a good practice for the TTW Yasaka Open coming up: here – July 13/14
Following the grade champs are 2 weeks off (the mid-year holidays are on) before Series 2 starts, after that (Aug 6/7) is Series 2 (any grading matches, if necessary, will be Aug 1). The Division grades continue until Sept 17/18 with a finals night Sept 25 (all grades – including Premier too).
Clubs will be preparing Series 2 team entries for the Division grades over the next few weeks so keep in contact with your club contacts about this – it is also a good time to bring in extra people into the winter interclub who weren’t available earlier so clubs can add more teams or make some alterations if necessary. Ask a friend who hasn’t played interclub before to come in for series 2 – a 7 week series could be a good introduction for them.
There is also a junior interclub starting around the same time for those more entry-level juniors who might not yet be ready for regular interclub.
Himatangi Transport Veterans Graded Open Doubles
This annual Veterans event hosted by the Manawatu Veterans Table Tennis Club will be held on Saturday 17th of August. It is open to anyone over the age of 40. Get some friends together and drive up in the same car and make a day of it! It will be held at Barber Hall Waldergrave Street, Palmerston North. Enter (by Aug 14) with Don Cooper whose details are on the entry form (below).

Week 5: Winter Interclub 18-19 June
Earlier in June (June 16) we had the first Junior development Tournament of 2013, I’m a bit late in posting this report from Kevin Haines who managed this event…
On a generally wintery day, 33 players played in the first of the Junior development tournaments for 2013. The level of entries meant for some good sized round robin groupings resulting in plenty of table tennis for those who attended. The standard was good to better with all appearing to benefit from the experience and the opportunity to plenty of games.
